When a value is stored using more than one byte, the bytes have to be stored in a particular order, just like how decimal numbers with multiple digits have to be written in a particular order. "Little-endian" is the "opposite" or "backwards" order from how Arabic numerals are written, meaning that the "first" or "leftmost" byte has the lowest place value.
